Last updated 7 August 2026  ·  33 guides  ·  Part of the VOCTOS library

This is the foundational library: how search engines decide what to rank, and which of the things you can change actually affect that. It covers the mechanics, the on-page and off-page work, keyword and query behaviour, link building, and the specific reasons sites lose visibility.

Where a claim here is contested or the evidence has moved, the guide says so. Search advice ages badly, and a large share of what circulates is several years out of date.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the practice of making a website more likely to be found by people searching for what it offers. It covers technical foundations, content that matches search intent, and signals of authority such as links and brand mentions. In 2026 it also increasingly covers being cited by AI answer engines, because most cited pages are already indexed and ranking.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Most sites see early movement in one to three months and meaningful compounding growth between three and six. The timeline depends on the site’s current technical health, how competitive the market is, and how much is invested. Technical fixes often move measurement within weeks; authority building is slower.

Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers questions directly?

Yes, and the two are connected rather than opposed. Ranking well remains the strongest lever you directly control over AI citations, even though the relationship has weakened: about 76% of AI Overview citations came from top-ten pages in July 2025, falling to roughly 38% by 2026. What has changed is that traffic is no longer the only outcome worth measuring.

What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

On-page covers everything you control on your own site: content, structure, internal links, titles and technical health. Off-page covers signals from elsewhere, primarily links and brand mentions. Both matter, and neither compensates for the other being badly neglected.
