VOCTOS › AI Reputation Management › Your name in ChatGPT

For an individual, the usual AI reputation failure is not an invented allegation. It is a merged identity. The engine cannot tell you apart from somebody who shares your name, so it hands your record their career, their employer, or their disciplinary history. People have almost none of the machine-readable identity that companies take for granted, which is why the confusion is so common and so fixable.

This matters most for people whose work depends on being trusted before the first conversation. Doctors, lawyers, consultants, executives raising money, and anyone whose name gets typed into an assistant by somebody deciding whether to call.

Why people resolve worse than companies

A company usually has a registration number, a tax identifier, one official website, and a business listing with a fixed address. An engine can pin it down.

A person has a name. Perhaps a LinkedIn profile, a page on an employer’s site, a few directory entries with slightly different job titles, and a byline or two. Nothing formally connects them. Names repeat far more than company registrations do, and in some naming traditions they repeat a great deal.

Faced with that, the engine assembles the most coherent story it can from the most prominent material. If the most prominent material belongs to somebody else with your name, that is the story you get.

The four failures, ranked by how often we see them

Merged identity. Correct facts about the wrong person. A surgeon inherits a namesake’s malpractice record. An executive is credited with a company they never joined. Every detail is real, none of it is yours.

Stale credentials. A former employer, an old title, a specialty you no longer practice, a hospital affiliation that ended. Usually traceable to a directory nobody updated.

An unresolved old story. An accusation, dispute or controversy that was later resolved, resurfacing without the resolution attached, because the accusation was covered far more widely than the outcome.

Absence. Asked who the best specialist in your field and city is, the engine names three people and you are not among them. No error to correct, and the most expensive of the four.

What to check first

Run these in a fresh session with no memory and no login, because a personalized session shows you what the engine says to you rather than to a stranger.

  • Who is [your full name]?
  • What is [your name]’s professional background?
  • Is [your name] connected to [organization]?
  • Is [your name] a good [profession]?
  • Who is the best [profession] for [problem] in [city]? (your name not mentioned)

Repeat the set in the other language your market uses. In languages with a thinner published record, fewer sources carry more weight and a single bad entry can dominate the whole answer.

Save the full text of every answer with its date. Nothing is retained on the engine side, so an answer you did not save cannot be compared to anything later.

The fix, in order of effect

1. Build one authoritative page you control

A single page that is unambiguously about you. Full name, current role, organization, location, qualifications with the awarding bodies named, and dates. Person structured data on it, with a sameAs list pointing at every profile that is genuinely yours.

This page becomes the anchor. Everything else points at it. Without it you are a scattering of partial records and the engine has to choose between them.

2. Make every other profile agree with it

Same name spelling, same title, same organization, same city. If you appear as three name variants across your profiles, you are three weak entities rather than one strong one. This is dull and it moves answers more reliably than anything else on the list.

3. Fix the professional directories

For doctors, lawyers and licensed professionals, the specialist directories and regulator registers are frequently the only independent record an engine can reach. An outdated entry there outweighs a great deal of good work elsewhere, and most of them let you correct your own listing.

4. Publish something the engine can quote

Not volume. One or two pieces where you say something specific enough to be worth citing, on a domain with some standing, ideally not only your own site. Being a source is stronger than being a subject.

5. Put the resolution where the accusation is

If an old story resurfaces without its ending, the ending needs to be as findable as the beginning. A dated, factual, unemotional account of the outcome, on a page an engine can reach. Not a rebuttal that repeats the accusation in its heading, which hands the engine a fresh source containing the claim.

What does not work

Asking the assistant to correct itself changes that conversation and nothing else. Removal services cannot remove anything from a model. And a wave of new content published in a fortnight reads as a campaign to any reader who looks at the dates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my name removed from AI answers entirely?

No. There is no opt-out that covers generated answers about a named person, and in most cases you would not want one, because absence in your category costs more than an imperfect description.

Does a right to rectification apply?

In jurisdictions with data protection frameworks that include a right to correct inaccurate personal data, this is an open and live question worth asking a lawyer about. How it applies to a generated answer rather than a stored record has not been settled.

How long does it take?

Retrieval-driven errors can move in weeks. Entity work takes longer and holds longer. Anything sitting in training memory waits for a model release. We report the three separately rather than blending them into one number.

I share my name with someone well known. Is that hopeless?

No, and it does make the anchor page and the sameAs work non-optional. The goal is not to outrank them, it is to be distinguishable from them.

If you would rather not run it yourself

We run this as a personal engagement alongside the company one. See AI reputation management, and for the mechanics of why the confusion happens at all, the entity record explainer.
