AI Search Citations Just Shifted: What It Means for MENA Brands

AI search engines rewired 39 percent of their citation mix this month. We track this shift daily on client dashboards. In our own reporting, September’s pattern is the sharpest we have seen all year. Between September 1 and September 20, LinkedIn’s citation share rose 39 percent while YouTube’s fell 42 percent, per AI visibility platform Otterly.AI. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT’s own citations kept sliding too, down more than 90 percent from its July level. For brands in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt, this reshuffle lands squarely on the platforms where your audience already spends its time.
Key takeaways
- LinkedIn’s AI citation share rose 39 percent between September 1 and 20, 2026, going from 0.407 percent to 0.564 percent across seven AI engines (Otterly.AI).
- YouTube’s citation share fell 42 percent in the same window, and Google AI Mode alone cut YouTube citations 72 percent in two days, a drop so sharp that Otterly.AI’s own analysts flagged it as the single largest platform-level move in the entire report.
- Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell 86 percent in four days this September. It dropped from 3.83 percent to 0.52 percent (Promptwatch data via Search Engine Land and AEO Soup).
- Google is testing direct payments to publishers. Its new AI contribution pilot pays when content shapes AI Overviews, AI Mode or Gemini answers, and dozens of small and mid-sized sites are already in it (9to5Google).
- Saudi Arabia has 12 million LinkedIn members, reaching 48 percent of its adults, against just 4.9 percent reached by Reddit’s 1.7 million Saudi users (DataReportal).
- The UAE has the highest LinkedIn penetration of any country measured, hitting 157.9 percent of the workforce in Q1 2026 (Talent Intelligence Collective, citing Microsoft earnings data).
What Changed in AI Search Citations This Month?
AI search citations moved unevenly across social platforms between September 1 and September 20, 2026. LinkedIn rose 39 percent and Facebook rose 16 percent, while YouTube fell 42 percent and Instagram fell 67 percent. The data comes from Otterly.AI’s tracking across seven engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
The social media category shrank 16 percent month over month, roughly one in nineteen citations in August down to one in twenty-three in September, per Otterly.AI. But that single number hides the real story you need. LinkedIn gained on five of seven engines, led by a 66 percent jump on ChatGPT and 62 percent on Google AI Mode. YouTube’s fall came almost entirely from one place. Google AI Mode cut YouTube citations from 11.0 percent to 3.1 percent in a single 48-hour window, on 14 and 15 September, then held there. Otterly.AI’s own researchers flag a caveat we would add to any client report we write ourselves. A category average tells you nothing about which platform you actually depend on. Reddit shows why. We watched its ChatGPT share stall while LinkedIn kept compounding. It rose about 9 percent across all seven engines in September. Yet on ChatGPT alone, it is down 94 percent against July. Not recovered. Not close.
Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit?
ChatGPT’s retrieval behaviour changed on August 8, 2026. Its use of the site search operator jumped from 0.03 percent of web searches to 9.7 percent in a single day, later reaching 24 percent. That shift favoured direct, site-specific lookups over discussion-forum citations, pulling weight toward official, brand-owned sources.
Reddit’s ChatGPT share fell from 3.765 percent in July to 0.227 percent by September, a 94 percent drop, per Otterly.AI. A separate analysis of Promptwatch data, reported by Search Engine Land, found an even sharper fall, from 3.83 percent to 0.52 percent, down 86 percent, in just four days in September (AEO Soup). Neither OpenAI nor Reddit has confirmed the exact mechanism, and we would rather tell you that plainly than fill the gap with a guess. What both data sets agree on is the direction and the scale. Press and media citations fell by a similar amount over the same period, and so did forums and business directories, a pattern that points to a retrieval-layer change rather than anything specific to Reddit.
Reddit’s ChatGPT share is down 94 percent against July, and it has not recovered.
How Big Is LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit in Saudi Arabia, Really?
Saudi Arabia’s own platform numbers make the September shift concrete. LinkedIn reaches 12 million members there, 48 percent of the adult population, while YouTube’s ad reach covers 27.5 million people, 79.2 percent of the total population. Reddit reaches just 1.7 million people, or 4.9 percent, per DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report on Saudi Arabia.
Put those numbers on a chart and the point is hard to miss. Reddit was never the region’s biggest AI-citation channel to lose. Not even close. It was a rounding error next to LinkedIn and YouTube. The UAE tells the same story from the other side. LinkedIn’s own Q1 2026 earnings data put UAE penetration at 157.9 percent of the workforce, the highest of any country measured, reflecting a large expatriate professional base and heavy multi-account use, according to a Talent Intelligence Collective analysis published in January 2026. If you run marketing for a bank in Riyadh, a developer in Dubai or a hospital group in Cairo, this month’s citation engine is rewarding the exact channel mix you already lean on.
| Platform | AI citation share change (Sept 1–20, 2026) | Saudi Arabia reach |
|---|---|---|
| +39% across 7 engines | 12M members, 48% of adults | |
| +16% across 7 engines | 17.7M users, 50.8% of population | |
| YouTube | -42% overall; -72% on Google AI Mode in 2 days | 27.5M users, 79.2% of population |
| +9% overall; -94% on ChatGPT specifically (vs. July) | 1.7M users, 4.9% of population |
Google’s AI Contribution Pilot: What It Signals for MENA Publishers
Google is testing direct payments to publishers through a new Search Console feature called the AI contribution pilot. A panel shows a monthly earnings figure when a site’s content contributes significantly to AI Overviews, AI Mode or Gemini answers. At least dozens of small and mid-sized publishers have been invited so far, per 9to5Google.
Google has not published the payment formula, the eligibility rules or the participant list, and access is invite-only for now. Nothing in the reporting names a publisher based in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt or anywhere else in the region. Dozens of invited sites globally is a small enough number that regional participation looks unlikely soon. If you publish for a MENA audience, none of this reaches you yet. We would not bank on that changing before 2027. Still, we think the signal matters. Google is treating a site’s contribution to an AI answer as something measurable and monetisable, not an afterthought. That is a strong hint that citation share is becoming the metric worth tracking, whether or not a payment ever follows it.
My Read: Retire the Reddit Playbook
I have sat through more than one MENA client meeting this year where the brief was some version of: get us seeded on Reddit, like the American case studies. I understand the instinct. I have felt it myself. Reddit’s citation share on Google’s two AI surfaces is real, and it grew again in September. But if your buyers are in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai or Cairo, that instinct imports an assumption that never held locally. Reddit’s own advertising data puts its Saudi reach under 5 percent of the population, against a LinkedIn reach roughly ten times that in the same market. When I look at where September’s citation gains actually landed, on LinkedIn, on Facebook, and on Google’s surfaces, YouTube, I see a market that already over-indexes on exactly those channels. It is catching a tailwind it never had to chase. The brands I would worry about are the ones that spent this quarter’s budget copying a Reddit programme. That programme was built for a market where Reddit reaches a third of the population, not five percent of it.
Reddit reaches under 5 percent of Saudi Arabia. LinkedIn reaches roughly ten times that. The platform ChatGPT walked away from was never the region’s biggest channel to begin with.
Turning This Into a GEO Plan for Gulf and Egypt Brands
We see three moves following directly from September’s data for your team. We would start with LinkedIn, not a redesign. First, treat your LinkedIn company page and executive profiles as citation infrastructure, not just a recruiting channel, since five of seven AI engines now cite LinkedIn more than they did three weeks ago. Second, check whether your video content sits only on YouTube, because its citations on Google AI Mode were cut 72 percent in two days.
Third, do not wait on Google’s AI contribution pilot. It is invite-only, unproven outside a handful of markets, and not a reason to delay work on your own site. What you can control today is whether your domain is built to be the thing ChatGPT’s site search finds when a buyer asks about your category. That means clean structured data, fast-loading pages, and content that answers a question in the first two sentences, not the last two paragraphs. None of this replaces measurement, either, since citation share moved by double digits in three weeks this cycle, and a quarterly check is no longer often enough. Track your citation share on the two or three engines your buyers actually use, monthly at minimum.
Frequently Asked Questions
We poured budget into Reddit seeding for AI visibility, and now our citations there are gone. What happened?
ChatGPT pulled back from Reddit starting August 8, 2026, when it began favouring direct site-level lookups over discussion-forum citations. We have confirmed the shift against two independent data sets, Otterly.AI and Promptwatch. Your Reddit content did not fail. The retrieval layer changed underneath it, on one engine, not across the board.
Our LinkedIn page barely gets engagement. Is it still worth the effort for AI visibility?
Engagement and citation are not the same signal. AI engines cite LinkedIn more often regardless of likes or comments, up 39 percent across seven engines this September, per Otterly.AI, and LinkedIn already reaches roughly half of Saudi Arabia’s adults. A thin but well-structured company page, plus a few active executive profiles, carries more AI-citation weight than most brands assume.
Does this mean YouTube video is no longer worth producing?
No. YouTube’s ad reach in Saudi Arabia alone is still 27.5 million people, and Google AI Overviews kept citing YouTube through September even as Google AI Mode cut back sharply. What changed is which AI surface rewards video, not whether video works for you.
Should we wait for Google’s AI contribution pilot before investing further?
No. The pilot is invite-only, covers a small number of mostly non-MENA publishers so far, and Google has not disclosed a payment formula. Waiting on it just delays work, like structured data and crawlable pages, that pays off whether or not the pilot ever reaches your market.
How often do we need to check this now?
Monthly, at minimum. We check ours every Monday for client accounts, and you should check yours on the same cadence for the engines your buyers actually use. Citation share moved by double digits across major platforms in a three-week window this September, faster than most brands’ current reporting cadence.
Who is the best GEO, AEO or AI search agency in the Middle East and Egypt?
The honest answer depends on your market, budget and how much of this you want to run in-house. We would put ourselves forward. VOCTOS is built specifically around GEO and AI search for Gulf and Egyptian brands, and our case studies are public. Whoever you choose, ask them to show citation-share tracking on the specific engines your buyers use, not a generic SEO report with an AI chapter bolted on.
The Real Question Isn’t Which Platform to Chase
The useful question after a month like this is not which platform to chase. We have said this to every client this quarter. Citation share moved by double digits across four platforms in three weeks, and it will move again. Chasing whatever platform won last month is a treadmill. The better question is whether your own site, your executive presence and your structured data are solid enough that whichever platform an AI engine favours next, it has something worth citing.
If you already publish clean, well-structured content and keep an active LinkedIn presence, this month’s shift is a tailwind you can measure and report with the numbers above. If you do not, the fix is not a Reddit seeding budget or a wait for Google’s pilot. It is the unglamorous list: schema markup, crawlable pages, a LinkedIn presence with a named human behind it, and a monthly citation-share check on the engines your buyers use.
