AI engines quote the thread. Your service page is not in the conversation.

When someone asks an assistant which agency, tool or supplier to use, much of what comes back is lifted from community discussion rather than from any company website. You cannot buy your way into that, and pretending to be a customer gets the account banned. What works is being genuinely useful in the threads your buyers already read, under your own name.

See where you are being discussed
  • Where the answer comes from

    • Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn dominate AI citations
    • A ranked thread outlives a ranked landing page
    • Your own site may never be quoted at all
  • Why buying it fails

    • Fake accounts get the brand flagged, not just the account
    • The same comment across ten subreddits reads as spam
    • A removed comment cites nothing
  • What actually works

    • Answering the question properly, affiliation stated first
    • Participating where you have something real to say
    • Accepting that most posts will not mention you
  • What we commit to

    • Disclosure on every comment made on your behalf
    • No fake accounts, ever, for any reason
    • Measured against AI answers, not comment counts

What the measurements actually say

Independent studies of AI citation sources disagree sharply on the size of the effect. Published 2026 figures for Reddit range from a couple of percent of Google AI Overview sources in one dataset to close to half of Perplexity’s sources in another. The spread is the honest finding: the number moves with the query set, the vertical, the language and the month it was measured.

What the studies agree on is direction. Across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, a small group of community and reference domains — Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn — account for a large share of everything cited. If a buyer asks an assistant for a recommendation in your category, the answer is more likely to be assembled from those than from your service page.

We report the range and the source rather than one convenient percentage, because a single number quoted without its method is how this field filled up with statistics nobody can defend.

Why the shortcut does not work

The obvious idea — spin up a few accounts, post glowing recommendations, get quoted — fails on mechanics before it fails on ethics. Reddit’s content policy prohibits content manipulation, including sockpuppeting and posting mainly to promote a business. Communities have moderators who do this all day and are good at it. A removed comment cites nothing, and an account tied to your brand that gets banned takes its mentions with it.

There is a slower failure too: it works for a while, someone notices, and the thread that ranks for your category becomes a thread about a company that astroturfs. That is a worse outcome than not being mentioned at all.

How we do it instead

  1. Find the threads that already matter. Not every thread — the ones already ranking for your commercial queries and already appearing as citations in AI answers. That list is usually shorter than clients expect.
  2. Check what each community allows. Every subreddit sets its own rules. Some ban promotion outright, some route it to a designated weekly thread, some only ask for disclosure. We read them before writing anything.
  3. Answer the question properly, with the affiliation stated up front. In the first sentence, not a footer. If a comment would not be worth posting without the mention, we do not post it.
  4. Contribute far more than we promote. Most of what gets posted will not mention you at all. Roughly nine useful contributions for every one that does is both what the platform expects and what keeps the account credible.
  5. Never the same text twice. One comment, one thread. Repeating a paragraph across communities is the fastest way to be classified as spam.
  6. Measure against AI answers. The metric is whether the assistant’s answer changed, not how many comments were posted.

Where this fits, and where it does not

This does not replace your own pages. Community citation moves the recommendation; your site still has to convert the person once the assistant sends them. It also does not work in every category. Where buyers do not discuss options publicly there is no thread to be useful in, and we will say so rather than manufacture one.

It works best where a real discussion already exists, where you have genuine expertise to contribute, and where somebody on your side is willing to be named. That last condition is usually what decides whether we recommend it.

The line we do not cross

What earns a citation, and what gets the account banned

The difference is not subtle, and moderators are not the only ones who can see it. Buyers reading the thread can too.

What we do
What we will not do
Who is posting
What we doA named person from your team, or us with the relationship disclosed.
What we will not doAn account created for the purpose, with no history and no name attached.
What the comment does
What we doAnswers the question so well it would stand without the mention.
What we will not doExists to carry the mention. Everything else is filler around it.
Disclosure
What we doIn the first sentence. "I work at X" before anything else.
What we will not doAbsent, buried, or only revealed if challenged.
Ratio
What we doMost contributions do not mention you at all.
What we will not doEvery post is a pitch, which is what gets an account removed.
Reuse
What we doOne comment, one thread, written for that thread.
What we will not doThe same paragraph pasted across communities.
When told no
What we doThe subreddit rule is respected and we find another route.
What we will not doA second account appears and tries again.

If a client asks us for the right-hand column, we decline and explain why. It is not a moral position so much as a practical one: the method in that column stops working the moment anyone looks closely, and it takes the brand down with it.

The engagement

What we actually do, month by month

Community work is slow and it is manual. There is no tool that does it, which is exactly why so few agencies offer it and why the ones that do usually mean something else.

01 Included

Thread and citation mapping

We find the discussions that rank for your commercial queries and check which of them AI assistants are already pulling from. That map is the deliverable, and it is useful even if you never post.

02 Included

Community rule review

Each target community is read for its own rules on promotion, disclosure and designated threads, so nothing is posted that was never going to survive.

03 Included

Named participation

Comments and answers written for the thread, posted with the affiliation stated in the first sentence, either from your named expert or from us on the record.

04 Included

Question monitoring

New threads in your category are watched, because the useful window on a question is usually the first day, not the first week.

05 Included

AI answer tracking

We track how the assistants answer your category questions before and after, so the result is measured where it is supposed to show up.

06 Included

An honest read on fit

If your category has no real public discussion, we say so and put the budget somewhere it works. This has happened, and it will happen again.

Want to know where you are already being discussed?

We will map the threads that rank for your category and show you which ones AI engines are already citing.

Questions about community citation work

Astroturfing is hiding who is speaking. Everything here is posted with the affiliation stated in the first sentence, from an account that is not pretending to be a customer. If the honest version does not work in your category, the dishonest version was never a real option either — it just fails later and more expensively.

No, and anyone who does is describing something they do not control. What we can do is get you present, credibly, in the discussions those systems draw on, and then measure whether the answers change. Some categories move in weeks. Some do not move at all, which is a result too and one we will report rather than bury.

It is much stronger if you do. A named engineer or founder answering a technical question carries weight that an agency account never will. Where that is not possible we post on the record as your agency, which is honest but less effective. We would rather tell you that in advance than let you discover it after six months.

That thread is probably being cited right now, which makes it more urgent than anything positive we could add elsewhere. The response is the same as any reputation problem: reply once, openly, address the substance, and do not argue. Deleting is not available to you and demanding removal usually makes it worse.

Less predictably. The Arabic-language discussion for most B2B categories is thinner and more scattered across platforms than the English-language equivalent, so the thread map is usually shorter. We check both, and if the Arabic side has nothing worth joining we say so rather than pad the deliverable.
