الخلاصة السريعة

  • Reputation management used to mean controlling the first page of search results. It now also means controlling what an AI assistant says about you when nobody is looking at a results page at all.
  • Reported use of AI tools to find local businesses rose from 6% to 45% within a single year. That is the fastest shift in discovery behavior any of us have had to plan around.
  • The commercial stakes are documented. A single negative result on page one has been associated with losing around 22% of potential customers, and a one-star drop in rating with a 5% to 9% revenue decline.
  • In the Gulf and Egypt, the reputation surface is different: Arabic reviews, WhatsApp forwards and Instagram comments carry weight that Western frameworks do not account for.
  • The hardest new problem is that an assistant can describe your business incorrectly, at scale, with no page you can point to and no complaint form to submit.

ما الذي تغيّر

Reputation management has always been a search problem. A buyer types your name, sees ten results, and forms a judgment from whatever is on that page. The discipline that grew around this was straightforward in principle: get good material to rank, respond to reviews, and push the bad results down.

That model assumes the buyer sees a list. Increasingly they see a paragraph instead. When someone asks an assistant whether your company is any good, the answer is a summary assembled from sources you may never have seen, delivered without the ten blue links that used to let a reader judge for themselves.

This creates a category of reputation problem that did not exist three years ago: being described inaccurately, consistently, by a system with no editor to email.

The numbers worth knowing

النتيجةالرقم المُعلنWhat it implies
Consumers who read reviews before buyingAround 83%Reviews are not a supplementary signal. They are part of the product page
Consumers who trust reviews like a personal recommendation85% to 88% across studiesA stranger’s review carries close to the weight of a friend’s advice
Consumers reading reviews for local businessesAround 97%For anything with a physical location, this is effectively universal
Use of AI tools to find local businessesRose from 6% to 45% in one yearThe discovery surface moved faster than most marketing plans did
Cost of one negative first-page resultAround 22% of potential customersA single bad result is a measurable revenue item
Effect of a one-star rating drop5% to 9% revenue declineRating maintenance is a financial control, not a marketing nicety
Consumers concerned about AI-generated fake reviewsAround 62%Trust in the review layer itself is now contested

A caution on all of these. They come from surveys and vendor studies conducted mostly on Western consumers, and the studies rarely publish sample sizes or question wording. Read them as evidence of direction and rough magnitude, not as constants you can plug into a model. The 6% to 45% figure in particular is a striking claim that deserves scrutiny before it goes into a board deck.

The three surfaces you now have to manage

الواجهةWhat appearsHow much control you have
Search results for your brand nameYour site, review platforms, news, directories, social profilesConsiderable. You can publish, optimize and respond
Review and map platformsStar ratings, individual reviews, photos, questionsPartial. You can respond and encourage, not remove
AI assistant answersA summary describing what you do and whether you are recommendedIndirect only. You influence the sources, never the output

The third row is where most businesses have no process at all. There is no dashboard, no notification when the description changes, and no support channel. The only way to know what an assistant says about you is to ask it, repeatedly, and write down the answers.

Reputation in the Gulf and Egypt works differently

Frameworks written elsewhere assume a reputation lives on review platforms and news sites. In this region a large part of it lives in places you cannot monitor with a tool.

Reputation moves through messaging, not only platforms

WhatsApp reaches more than 83% of internet users in Saudi Arabia and above 80% of the population in the UAE. A complaint forwarded through family and work groups can do more damage in a week than a one-star review does in a year, and none of it appears in any monitoring dashboard.

There is no technical fix. The practical response is a service one: resolve the complaint in the channel it started in, quickly, and give the person something worth forwarding. A screenshot of a fast, decent reply travels through the same groups the complaint did.

Arabic reviews are undermanaged almost everywhere

Most regional businesses answer English reviews and leave Arabic ones alone, usually because whoever handles the inbox works in English. The gap is visible to every Arabic-speaking customer who reads the profile.

A screenshot of a fast, decent reply travels through the same groups the complaint did.

It matters for AI answers too. When an assistant summarises sentiment about a business it reads what is written, including the Arabic reviews and including whether anyone replied. An unanswered wall of Arabic complaints is a source, and it will be used.

The entity problem

Businesses here commonly trade under an English name and an Arabic one, often with several transliterations of each. If those are not connected, your reputation is split across separate entities. Good reviews accumulate under one name and complaints under another, and an assistant asked about you may find only one half.

Fixing this is unglamorous and high value: one canonical name, the Arabic name declared as an alternate, identical listings everywhere, and the same identifier used across all of them.

When an assistant describes you wrongly

This is the newest problem and the one with the least established practice. An assistant says you serve a market you left, offer a service you discontinued, or attributes to you something belonging to a similarly named company. There is no correction form.

An unanswered wall of Arabic complaints is a source, and it will be used.

What works is indirect, because the only input you control is the evidence.

Correcting what an assistant says about youCorrecting what an assistant says about you1Find thesourceWhere the errorcomes from›2Fix thesourceNot theassistant›3State thefactsOne clearstatement›4Clear entityUnmistakablerecord›5Re-checkOn a scheduleSource: the correction routine described in this article
  1. Find the source of the error. Ask the assistant where the claim came from. Often it names a page, and frequently that page is an outdated directory listing, an old press release, or something on your own site nobody has read in three years.
  2. Correct the source, not the assistant. Update or remove the underlying page. If it belongs to a third party, ask them. This is slower than it sounds and it is the only durable fix.
  3. Publish an unambiguous statement of fact. A page stating plainly what you do, where you operate and what you no longer offer gives the assistant something better to draw on. Write it as statements, not marketing prose, because statements are what get extracted.
  4. Make the entity unmistakable. Most misattribution comes from confusion with a similarly named business. Consistent naming and structured data reduce it more than any content you publish.
  5. Re-check on a schedule. Answers change without notice. A monthly check on ten fixed questions catches a new error before a customer does.

Set expectations honestly with whoever asked you to fix it. Correcting sources does not produce an immediate change in the answer, and sometimes it produces none. Anyone promising to remove a specific statement from an assistant’s output on a timeline is describing something they do not control.

A monitoring routine that costs nothing

الوتيرةCheckTime
يوميًاNew reviews on your main platforms, in both languages. Respond to all of them, including the positive ones10 minutes
أسبوعيًاSearch your brand name in Arabic and English while logged out. Note anything new on page one5 minutes
شهريًاAsk three assistants the same ten questions, five about your brand and five about your category. Record answers verbatim30 minutes
ربع سنويCompare the recorded answers over time. Look for descriptions that drifted and competitors that started appearing1 hour

The monthly row is the one nobody does. It is also the only way to notice that an assistant has started describing you as something you are not, which is the failure that costs most and announces itself least.

ما يجب ألا تفعله

  • Do not buy reviews. Around 62% of consumers already worry about fake reviews, platforms detect the patterns, and the penalty when it is found is worse than the problem you were solving.
  • Do not argue publicly. A defensive reply is read by every future customer and stays there long after the complainant has moved on.
  • Do not suppress by flooding. Publishing thin pages to push a bad result down is temporary and leaves you with a site full of thin pages.
  • Do not ignore Arabic. It is the most common and most visible failure in this region.
  • Do not treat legal action as a reputation strategy. It occasionally removes a page and frequently creates a larger story.

أسئلة شائعة

Can negative results be removed from search?

Rarely, and only where there is a legal or policy basis such as defamation or a privacy breach. In most cases the realistic goal is to make the accurate, useful material about you stronger than the negative item so a reader forms a fair judgment.

How do I find out what AI says about my company?

Ask it. Use three or four assistants, ask in Arabic and English, and include both brand questions and category questions. Repeat each a few times because answers vary between runs, and record what comes back so you have something to compare next month.

Should we respond to every review?

Yes, in the language the review was written in. Responses are read by future customers and by systems summarising sentiment about you. An unanswered complaint reads as an admission, whatever the facts are.

How long does reputation repair take?

It depends what is wrong. A single bad result can be outranked in weeks if you have material worth ranking. A pattern of genuine service complaints cannot be fixed with marketing at all, and attempting it usually makes the pattern more visible.

Is reputation management the same as GEO?

They have converged. Reputation work now includes influencing how assistants describe you, which is the same evidence problem as being cited by them. The difference is emphasis: reputation work asks whether the description is accurate and fair, visibility work asks whether you appear at all.
