They tell OpenAI which conversations your offer suits. OpenAI’s help center describes them as broad thematic signals that guide matching, not exact-match keywords, and says they do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation.

The matching system reads your hints alongside the ad title, the ad copy and the landing page, then makes the final relevance call. That makes a hint closer to a brief than a bid.

A Google Ads keyword names what someone typed. A context hint names a person in a situation. “Dental implants Riyadh” is a keyword. “Adults in Riyadh comparing the cost of dental implants with bridges after losing a back tooth” is a hint.

How do context hints differ from Google Ads keywords?

A keyword is matched as a string. A hint is interpreted as meaning across the whole conversation, so one well-written hint covers dozens of ways of asking the same thing. You stop listing variants and start describing the buyer.

Google Ads keyword

ChatGPT context hint

What it targets

A search query

A person in a specific situation

How it matches

Exact, phrase or broad string match

Meaning across the whole chat

Coverage

One phrasing per keyword

Many phrasings of one need

Negative control

Negative keywords

Exclusions written into the hint

Delivery

Eligible when the query matches

No guarantee, the system decides relevance

Reporting

Search terms report

No search terms report yet

The last row matters most. Without a search terms report, you cannot see which conversations triggered your ad. The hint is both your targeting and your only diagnostic, so a vague hint leaves you guessing about everything downstream.

How do you write a context hint that works?

A strong hint names four things: who the person is, what they are trying to solve, the constraint that shapes the decision, and where they are in the decision. Leave out any one and the matcher has to guess, usually in the direction of more impressions and fewer buyers.

A simple pattern holds most good hints together:

Who. Role, life stage or business type, and the country or city if it changes the offer.

What they are solving. The problem in the words they would use in a chat.

The constraint. Budget, deadline, regulation, language or a feature they cannot do without.

The moment. Exploring options, comparing two or three, or ready to book.

Keep each hint to one or two sentences. If a hint grows longer, it usually describes two buyers, and those belong in separate ad groups. OpenAI’s own guidance gives the same rule: meaningfully different products, audiences or use cases go in different ad groups.

A keyword names what someone typed. A context hint names a person in a situation.

What do good hints look like for Gulf and Egyptian businesses?

Good hints read like a sentence from a real chat in your market, with the local constraint left in. The examples below are drafts we would start from, not tested results. Each pairs a weak, keyword-style hint with a stronger rewrite.

Business

Weak hint

Stronger hint

Dental clinic, Riyadh

Dental implants Riyadh

Adults in Riyadh comparing dental implants with bridges after losing a back tooth, who want to know total cost and recovery time before booking a consultation

Online fashion store, UAE

Abayas online UAE

Women in the UAE looking for lightweight everyday abayas for summer heat, comparing fabric and delivery times before Eid

B2B software, Saudi Arabia

ERP software KSA

Finance managers at Saudi companies of 50 to 300 staff who need ZATCA-compliant e-invoicing and are comparing ERP systems before the next integration deadline

Language school, Cairo

English courses Cairo

Working professionals in Cairo preparing for IELTS within three months who need evening or online classes

Property developer, Dubai

Apartments for sale Dubai

Expat families in Dubai comparing off-plan and ready apartments near schools, deciding whether to buy instead of renewing a lease

Notice what the stronger versions keep: a city, a constraint and a decision. Those are the details a person types into ChatGPT and leaves out of a Google search.

Should you write context hints in Arabic or English?

Write hints in the language your buyers chat in, and test both when your market is bilingual. OpenAI matches on meaning, so an English hint can still describe an Arabic conversation. Nobody has yet published Arabic-language ChatGPT ads results, so treat language as a variable to measure, not a settled rule.

In practice, split by language at the ad group level, the same way you would split Arabic and English search campaigns. That keeps the ad copy and landing page consistent with the conversation, and the matcher weighs all three together.

Two Gulf-specific details deserve a place in the hint when they apply. Name the emirate or city if delivery, licensing or price differs by location. Name the season or occasion, such as Ramadan, Eid, back-to-school or summer, because those change what people ask and when.

Why do some ads get rejected, and how do you avoid it?

Rejections so far point to one pattern: ads that read as if the AI itself is making a promise. Synter, a paid media software company, had three ads flagged under OpenAI’s “platform integrity and misrepresentation” reason in June 2026. All three claimed their product acts autonomously, and the rewrites that passed led with what the user gets.

That lesson travels well beyond software. Inside a ChatGPT answer, a card that sounds like the assistant vouching for you is the risk. Keep a human in the sentence, describe the outcome plainly and avoid claims the landing page cannot back up.

Regulated categories need extra care in the Gulf. Health, finance and real estate claims face local advertising rules on top of OpenAI’s policies. A hint can describe the need, but the ad and landing page still have to meet both sets of rules.

How should the ad copy work with the hint?

The hint gets you into the conversation. The ad copy has to survive it. Anicca Digital’s July 2026 UK trial found that ad text is truncated heavily and the image renders small, so the offer has to sit in the first few words and the image works best as a brand cue.

Write the title as the answer to the situation in your hint. If the hint describes someone comparing implants with bridges, the title should speak to that comparison, not to “Riyadh’s leading dental clinic”. The landing page should then continue the same thread, because OpenAI weighs it in relevance as well.

Keep one message per ad group. The chat card has a title, one or two sentences of body text, an image and a link. There is no room for the stacked headlines you would test in Google responsive search ads.

How do you know whether a hint is working?

Read click-through rate per ad group and per country in the first week, then look past the click. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, cost per click and conversions. It does not show which conversations matched, so you judge a hint by what it delivers.

Same hints, five markets: click-through rate decided the price
<text x="0" y="30" font-size="19" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">Same hints, five markets: click-through rate decided the price</text><text x="0" y="56" font-size="12.5" font-weight="400" fill="#55617A" text-anchor="start">One advertiser, one topic structure, CPMs of $26 to $37 in every market.</text><text x="0" y="115" font-size="13" font-weight="600" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">UK</text><rect x="250" y="96" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#F1F2F6"/><rect x="250" y="96" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#9BB725"/><text x="734" y="116" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">0.72% CTR · $5.10 CPC</text><text x="0" y="173" font-size="13" font-weight="600" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">Canada</text><rect x="250" y="154" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#F1F2F6"/><rect x="250" y="154" width="235" height="30" rx="8" fill="#7616F4"/><text x="734" y="174" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">0.36% CTR · $8.33 CPC</text><text x="0" y="231" font-size="13" font-weight="600" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">US</text><rect x="250" y="212" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#F1F2F6"/><rect x="250" y="212" width="215" height="30" rx="8" fill="#7616F4"/><text x="734" y="232" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">0.33% CTR · $10.62 CPC</text><text x="0" y="289" font-size="13" font-weight="600" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">Australia</text><rect x="250" y="270" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#F1F2F6"/><rect x="250" y="270" width="110" height="30" rx="8" fill="#55617A"/><text x="734" y="290" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">0.17% CTR · $17.59 CPC</text><text x="0" y="347" font-size="13" font-weight="600" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">New Zealand</text><rect x="250" y="328" width="470" height="30" rx="8" fill="#F1F2F6"/><rect x="250" y="328" width="71" height="30" rx="8" fill="#55617A"/><text x="734" y="348" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#0D172D" text-anchor="start">0.11% CTR · $22.89 CPC</text><text x="0" y="414" font-size="11.5" font-weight="400" fill="#55617A" text-anchor="start">Source: Synter, "ChatGPT Ads: What 130,000 Real Impressions Taught Us in 9 Days", 2 to 10 June 2026.</text>

Synter’s data shows why country matters. It paid between $26 and $37 per thousand impressions in all five markets, but click-through rate ranged from 0.72% in the UK to 0.11% in New Zealand. Cost per click followed, from $5.10 to $22.89. When impressions cost roughly the same, the hint’s fit with local conversations decides the price of a click.

Volume tells you something too. In Synter’s account, an ad group about programmatic advertising received one impression in the UK in nine days while another topic took 74% of US volume. If an ad group stays starved after a week, the conversations it describes are not happening. Rewrite it or turn it off.

Then check who actually arrived. Floyd Blaikie’s B2B test traced 336 paid clicks to 146 organizations and found five that matched the ideal customer. A good click-through rate on the wrong buyers is a hint problem, not a bidding problem.

My read on context hints

Most guides treat context hints as a copywriting task. I think they are a research task first. The best input is not your Google Ads keyword list. It is what your buyers actually ask an AI assistant, in their own language, with their own constraints.

That is why I would hand the first draft of hints to the people who hear customer questions every day: the sales team, the clinic front desk, the support inbox. Then I would check those questions against what ChatGPT already answers about your category. If ChatGPT names three competitors when someone describes your buyer’s problem, that conversation is real, and it is worth a hint.

There is also a link to organic work that most advertisers miss. The same research that produces good hints shows where your brand is absent from AI answers. We use that research in our generative engine optimization work, and it is the cheapest way to see which conversations are worth paying for.

Questions advertisers ask about context hints

Can we just paste our Google Ads keywords in as hints?

You can, but expect weak matching. Keywords name queries, and hints should name people in situations. Rewrite each keyword cluster as one or two sentences that describe the buyer, the need, the constraint and the moment.

How many hints should one ad group have?

Enough to describe one buyer from a few angles, such as the problem, the comparison and the outcome they want. When the hints start describing different buyers or products, split them into separate ad groups so matching stays clean.

Will a good hint guarantee our ad shows in the right chats?

No. OpenAI states that context hints guide matching but do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations. The system also weighs your ad copy and landing page before deciding relevance.

Our click-through rate is fine but leads are poor. Is it the bid?

Usually it is the hint. A broad hint matches broad conversations, and the clicks come from people who were curious rather than buying. Add the constraint and the decision stage to the hint, and measure lead quality outside Ads Manager.

The better question to ask

The useful question is not how to write a clever hint. It is whether you know what your buyers ask an AI assistant before they choose a supplier. If you do, the hints almost write themselves. If you do not, that research is the first job, and it pays off in paid and organic search alike.

If you are planning a first ChatGPT ads test in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Egypt, talk to our ChatGPT Ads team.
