The tactics are not the hard part. The hard part is knowing whether any of it worked, because AI answers change every time you ask. This guide is the operating version: phases, owners, the measurement method that survives scrutiny, and the things Google has now said in writing you can skip.

Key takeaways

GEO is SEO plus two extra layers: a measurement layer for AI answers and an off-site layer for mentions. You confirm engines can reach your pages, define the prompts that matter, measure your visibility share, improve pages and off-site signals, then measure again. It is SEO with a measurement layer and an off-site layer added, not a separate discipline.

Google is blunt about the first part. Its guide to generative AI features says SEO best practices still apply because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each retrieve differently, but all of them need a page they can fetch, understand and trust.

What changes is what you measure and where the evidence lives. The workflow below has five phases:

Eligibility. Can engines crawl, index and quote you?

Baseline. Which prompts matter, and how visible are you today?

Page work. Fix the pages engines should be citing.

Off-site work. Earn mentions on the sources engines already use.

Re-measure and decide. Scale what moved, drop what did not.

For the definitions behind SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO, start with our AI search optimization pillar guide. This article is about running the work.

Can AI engines reach and cite your site at all?

Before any content work, confirm three things. Your priority pages are indexed and eligible for a Google snippet. Your robots.txt, CDN and firewall let each AI engine’s search crawler through. And the text that matters sits in the HTML instead of being injected by JavaScript. If any of the three fails, nothing else in this workflow can work.

Google sets the bar plainly in AI features and your website: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements. Being eligible does not mean being picked. It means you are in the pool.

ChatGPT works through its own crawler. OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which collects training data. You can block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply.

The checks we run in weeks one and two:

Every priority URL returns 200, is indexed in Search Console and is not blocked by
nosnippet
or
max-snippet:0
.

robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot, and the CDN or firewall does not challenge them. Bot-management settings can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Prices, specs, FAQs and author details appear in the raw HTML. We have seen JavaScript-rendered content disappear for AI crawlers on otherwise healthy sites.

The page already ranks for the topic. Ranking is not the finish line, though. In our Saudi healthcare citation study, the lab that ranked first organically on 19 questions appeared in 63.2% of the Arabic answers, not all of them.

How do you build a prompt set that reflects real buyers?

Build 30 to 50 prompts from evidence, not imagination. Pull them from Search Console queries phrased as questions, sales and support conversations, People Also Ask boxes and comparison searches. Write them the way buyers talk, group them by intent and funnel stage, and build a separate Arabic set if you sell in Egypt or the Gulf.

Two findings shape how we build the set. First, people phrase the same need in wildly different ways. SparkToro collected 142 human-written prompts for the same headphone-buying intent and measured an average semantic similarity of 0.081 between them. The engines still recognized the shared intent and returned a consistent group of brands. So track intents with several phrasings each, not one exact string.

Second, language changes the answer. In our study of 40 matched Arabic and English healthcare questions in Saudi Arabia, the cited sources overlapped by 0.149 on average, and 14 pairs shared nothing at all. Commercial pages took 69.3% of Arabic citations against 58.2% of English ones. An English-only prompt set will tell you nothing about your Arabic visibility.

Prompt type

Example

What it tells you

Category

Best dental clinic in Riyadh for implants

Whether you are in the engine’s shortlist at all

Comparison

Clinic A vs Clinic B for implants

How you are described next to a named rival

Problem

Why does my implant hurt after a week

Whether your expert content gets cited for informational needs

Price and process

How much do dental implants cost in Saudi Arabia

Whether your pricing page is trusted as a source

Brand

Is Clinic A good for implants

What the engine says about you, including mistakes

Weight the set toward category and comparison prompts. That is where buying decisions get made and where a missing brand loses the most.

How do you measure AI visibility without fooling yourself?

Measure visibility share, not rank. Run each prompt several times on each engine, record whether your brand is named or linked, and report the percentage of runs you appear in. AI engines rarely return the same list twice, so a single screenshot or a report claiming “position 2 in ChatGPT” tells you almost nothing about your real visibility.

The evidence is now public. SparkToro and Gumshoe had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s AI 2,961 times. They found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same brand list twice, and about 1 in 1,000 of getting it in the same order.

The same study found something useful. How often a brand appears across many runs is stable enough to track. That is the metric to build on.

“Any tool that gives a ‘ranking position in AI’ is full of baloney.”

Rand Fishkin, co-founder of SparkToro, summarizing 2,961 runs across ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s AI

Our baseline protocol:

Engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode or AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. Add Claude for B2B and technical buyers.

Runs: three to five runs per prompt per engine, in the same week, logged out, from the target country.

What to log: named or not, linked or not, the wording used about you, and every domain the answer cites.

How to read it: compare month against month on the full set. A single prompt moving up or down is noise until it repeats.

Then connect it to business data. Track AI referral sessions and conversions in GA4, which got easier once Gemini started tagging its links, and watch branded search in Search Console. Visibility that never turns into branded demand or referrals is a vanity number.

Metric

How it is calculated

Why it matters

Mention rate

Runs that name you divided by total runs

Are you in the engine’s consideration set?

Citation rate

Runs that link to your site divided by total runs

Do engines treat your pages as evidence?

Share of voice

Your mentions against named competitors’ mentions

Are you winning or losing the shortlist?

Cited-source list

Every domain cited across all runs

Your off-site target list for phase four

AI referrals and conversions

GA4 sessions from AI sources and their conversions

Does visibility turn into revenue?

Which pages should you fix first, and what changes earn citations?

Fix the pages that already rank on page one or two for your prompt topics first, because engines retrieve from pages they already trust. Then add what research shows gets quoted: specific statistics with sources, short attributed quotes, citations to primary sources, and a direct answer at the top of each section that makes sense on its own.

The research base is the Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO paper presented at KDD 2024. It reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine answers. Adding quotations, statistics and source citations were among the methods that helped, while classic keyword stuffing performed poorly. Treat the exact percentages as directional, since the test engines have changed since 2024.

Google adds a useful limit. Its guide says you do not need to chunk content into tiny pieces or rewrite it in a special way for AI. We agree. Answer-first sections help because they help the reader, not because a model needs fragments.

How we pick the first ten pages:

Pages ranking in positions 1 to 20 for the topics in your prompt set.

Pages tied to revenue: services, pricing, comparisons, locations.

Pages with stale facts. Old prices, last year’s figures and dead statistics are easy wins.

Then fill the gaps. If your baseline shows prompts where you have no page at all, such as “X vs Y” or “cost of X in Riyadh”, those pages come next.

Delta Medical Labs shows what a strong ranking base does for AI citations: the lab holds 1,186 first-place rankings in Saudi Arabia, and 5,570 of its pages are cited by AI engines. On FBS.com, combined SEO and GEO work produced a 109% rise in organic sessions and twice the AI mentions.

How do you get cited off your own site?

Earn genuine mentions on the sources engines already cite for your prompts. Your baseline log shows which domains appear in the answers, so the off-site plan writes itself: get listed, reviewed, quoted or discussed on those pages, keep your brand facts identical everywhere, and publish expert content on LinkedIn, which AI search cites heavily.

The strongest public evidence comes from Ahrefs. In its study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the highest correlation with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, ahead of branded anchors at 0.527 and branded search volume at 0.392. That is correlation, not proof of cause. It still tells you where to spend.

LinkedIn earns a specific line in the plan. In Semrush’s study of 89,000 cited LinkedIn URLs, LinkedIn was the second most cited domain across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, appearing in 11% of responses on average.

What goes into phase four:

Target the cited-source list. Directories, review sites, comparison articles and forums that already appear in answers for your prompts.

Fix your entity facts. One description, one category, one address and one set of services across every profile. Our guide to building a brand entity covers the details.

Run digital PR for evidence, not links. Original data and expert commentary get quoted. See digital PR for GEO.

Collect real reviews. Review platforms shape how engines describe you, which we covered in Trustpilot and G2 reviews and AI answers.

Join communities honestly. Answer questions on Reddit and Quora where you know the answer, and say who you are.

Google draws a hard line on the shortcut. Its guide says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems, because its core systems focus on quality and other systems block spam.

What should you skip?

Skip anything that promises AI visibility without making your content more useful or your brand more cited. Google’s guide lists llms.txt files, special AI markup, chunking pages into fragments, rewriting copy for AI and chasing inauthentic mentions as things that do not help in Google Search. Paying for a “rank in ChatGPT” report belongs on the same list.

“Google Search itself doesn’t use them.”

Google Search Central, on llms.txt files and other “special” AI markup

A note on llms.txt, since many GEO guides, including older ones, still recommend it. Google says creating one will neither help nor harm your visibility in Google Search, because Search ignores it. Other systems may read it. That makes it a low-priority task for the end of the cycle, never a first step.

Also skip:

Mass-producing AI-written pages for every prompt variant. Google’s spam policies already target scaled content abuse.

Rewriting every page at once before you have a baseline. You will never know which change worked.

Treating one good screenshot as a win. Measure the full set across runs.

What does a 16-week GEO plan look like?

A realistic first cycle takes about 16 weeks. Eligibility takes two weeks, the prompt set and baseline take two more, page work runs six weeks, off-site work overlaps through week 14, and a final re-measurement decides what to scale. Each phase has an owner and a pass condition, so nobody keeps working on a phase that has already failed.

<svg viewBox="0 0 860 345" role="img" aria-label="Timeline of a 16-week GEO cycle. Refresh the prompt set, re-check facts on your top pages and repeat the measurement with the same method so the numbers stay comparable.

Should GEO be run in-house or by an agency?

Keep the facts in-house and buy the method if you lack it. Your team owns product truth, pricing, expert input and approvals. An agency earns its fee on the parts that need repetition and reach: prompt sampling across engines, technical fixes and off-site placements. If an agency reports your “rank in ChatGPT”, that is your cue to leave.

Whoever runs it, ask for three things before signing: the prompt set and how it was built, the sampling method behind every visibility number, and the cited-source list that drives the off-site plan. We published our own answers to 27 questions buyers ask GEO agencies, including the ones we fail.

Frequently asked questions

How long does GEO optimization take to show results?

Expect the first reliable read at the end of a 16-week cycle. Eligibility fixes can lift visibility within weeks, but page and off-site work needs time to be crawled, re-indexed and picked up by engines. Judge progress by month-over-month visibility share across your full prompt set, not by any single answer.

Can you do GEO without SEO?

No. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking systems, and a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be cited. Other engines also retrieve from pages they can crawl and trust. GEO adds measurement and off-site work on top of SEO. It does not replace it.

Does llms.txt help GEO?

Not in Google Search. Google’s guide says Search ignores llms.txt files, so creating one neither helps nor harms visibility there. Some other systems may read it, which makes it a low-priority task. Crawler access, indexable HTML, answer-first pages and genuine mentions matter far more for AI visibility.

How do you measure GEO results?

Run a fixed set of 30 to 50 buyer prompts three to five times on each engine and record how often you are named and linked. Report that as a visibility share against competitors, then connect it to AI referral sessions and conversions in GA4 and branded search in Search Console.

Who is the best GEO agency in Egypt and the Middle East?

The best GEO agency for you is one that shows its prompt set, its sampling method and real client results in your language. VOCTOS runs SEO and GEO for brands in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with Arabic and English measurement. You can review our published case studies before deciding.

Where should you start this week?

Start with measurement, not content. Write 30 prompts your buyers actually ask, in both languages if you sell in the region, run them on four engines, and log who gets named and which sources get cited. That one spreadsheet will tell you which pages to fix and which sites to approach, and it is the number every later phase gets judged against.

If you want a first read without building the log yourself, run our free AI visibility check. It tests your site against live buyer questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

Sources

Google Search Central: Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search

Google Search Central: AI features and your website

OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers

SparkToro: AIs are highly inconsistent when recommending brands or products (January 2026)

Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, KDD 2024

Ahrefs: An analysis of AI Overview brand visibility factors (75K brands)

Semrush: We analyzed 89K LinkedIn URLs cited in AI search (March 2026)

VOCTOS: What Google AI Mode cites when a Saudi patient asks in Arabic (September 2026)

Related reading

How to Get AI Search Answers to Recommend Your Business

How to Get Cited by Claude

Which Sources Do AI Engines Actually Trust?

Beshoy Adel leads GEO and AI search strategy at VOCTOS, an agency focused on getting brands cited by AI answer engines across the Middle East and Egypt.

{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [{"@type": "Question", "name": "How long does GEO optimization take to show results?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Expect the first reliable read at the end of a 16-week cycle.
